Accommodations for Expectant Parents
Family-Friendly Policies and Procedures for Ph.D. Students
- New Parent Accommodation, A student in a Ph.D. program at Penn is eligible for time off of eight weeks for the birth or adoption of a child.
- Family Leave of Absence Policy, A student in the Ph.D. program at Penn may take an unpaid Family Leave of Absence for the birth or adoption of a child, child care, or care of an immediate family member (spouse, domestic partner, child, or parent) with a serious health condition.
- Visit the Penn Book for more information about the PhD policies and how to request them.
Leave of Absence and Accommodations for non-PhD students
- Students who need pregnancy accommodations can get assistance at Student Disability Services.
- Students should reach out to their academic advisors and program administrators to discuss the specific leave and accommodation policies in the student's school/program.
Post-doc Parents can access New Child Leave.
- Postdocs are entitled to receive stipends for no more than 60 calendar days of leave per appointment year for adoption or birth of a child. New Child Leave should be coordinated with your postdoc mentor.
Family Center staff can advise students and postdocs on accommodations and leaves of absence, email familycenter@upenn.edu to request an advising appointment or discuss Title IX protections for pregnant and parenting students and postdocs.

Penn Medicine's Penn Parent Resource Center
- Penn Medicine's Penn Parenting Resource Center, formerly Solutions for Women, offers parenting and breastfeeding support services, including outpatient lactation services.
